Special Delivery at Davis Regional Medical Center offers:
An additional birthing option for expectant mothers is a water birth. A water birth simply means at least part of a woman’s labor, delivery or both happen while she is in a water birth tub that is filled with warm water. Using the water birth tub may help ease pain, resulting in less use of anesthesia. It may even help speed up the labor process.
Before introducing this delivery option, Davis Regional Medical Center researched the guidelines that were established by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Obstetricians on staff as well as other key medical staff members were involved in the consideration and decision to offer this innovative approach for patients.
We are pleased to offer expectant moms a new birthing option, but it should be noted that not everyone is a good candidate for water births. Some things to consider are the patient’s age, gestation, size of baby, and pre-existing conditions. If the expectant mother is younger than 17 or older than 35, she may not be a good candidate. Complications like preeclampsia or diabetes, having twins or multiples, premature birth, or if the baby is very large, may make the mother not a good candidate for the water birth option.
Expectant moms who are thinking about a water birth should first talk to their obstetrician or midwife to find out if this is a good option for their delivery. Typically insurances cover water births but patients may want to check and verify.
